Part 2 - The Mission

Marcus decided to ring his friend Chris and tell him the news. Chris had been his best friend for as long as he could remember, sharing his passion for gaming. He congratulated him and said he'd be over right away for a spot of Guitar Hero anyway. He also tried to call his other friend Haley (although everyone called her Nighty) but left her a message to come round as she didn't answer.

On the way home, Marcus started to notice something wrong with the way everything looked. It was all unrealistic looking, almost pixelated even. It was only slight, but slight enough for him to take notice. He met Chris on the street leading up to his house and asked him, but he said everything seemed fine.

Coming round the corner directly on the other side of the street as Marcus and Chris was Commander Lewis Paston, otherwise known as LickThePaint. Trained since he was a boy in Nightscream's London headquarters, LTP knew the streets of London inside-out and back-to-front, and was no beginner when it came to combat, either. At Nightscream, you don't earn the commander rank for nothing, as the young men coming around the corner opposite were about to find out. Behind LTP trailed Zyrow, Flare and Gambit, all fairly inexperienced with a gun and still training at Nightscream.

'Marc.. I think I see what you were talking about earlier now,' Chris said as they walked into the garden and up the stairs leading to the front door. 'Everything looks a little tacky, unrealistic.'
As Chris finished his sentence, Nighty appeared round the corner, slightly out of breath.
'Hey guys, sorry I couldn't answer your call, I was a little caught up.' She exclaimed.
'It's no problem, you haven't missed anything, come on inside.' Marcus said.

As he reached into his inside jacket pocket for his keys, a deafening gunshot flew just above Chris' head.
'Get down!' shouted Marcus.
Everything was in complete pandemonium as bullets whizzed above the garden fence left, right and centre.
'Into the house!' Marcus shouted, thinking it the best option in this position. The bullets had stopped and he could hear footsteps coming towards the garden gate. Marcus unlocked the door and the three ran in, before locking every lock on the door. Chris immediately picked up the phone in the hallway and dialed 999, but there was no signal.
'Shit, receptions gone..' exclaimed Chris as a giant fist pounded straight through the door, leaving a big hole in it. As the fist came through, a purple tattoo reading 'Nightscream' on the knuckles could be seen.
'Through the back door!' said Nighty as the three hurried through the kitchen and out into the back garden, before jumping over the fence. None of the neighbours were out or even had their windows open, almost as if they were oblivious to what was going on outside.

They jumped over the fence into somebody elses back garden before hurrying through the front onto the main road. A man had just got out of his car and the trio took no chances and jumped into it. Chris jumped into the drivers seat with Marcus in the passenger seat and Nighty in the back. The engine, which was still on, roared as the car leapt forward. They turned off the main road onto the ring road, before going round the roundabout onto another main road. Just as they thought they were safe, four men on motorbikes pulled up alongside the car, two at the sides and one each at the back and front. Commander LTP wasn't going to let this mission be a failure, as the boy was vital to Nightscream's operations. Gunshots were fired and the back left tire popped, skidding the car out of control into an oncoming department store. As the car smashed through the brick wall, the pursuers followed on and also turned into the department store. Nobody in the store seemed to take notice, they acted as if it was a normal day and there wasn't a huge car-chase going on inside the shop they were in. The car smashed through a huge stack of teddy bears, before smashing out of the other end of the store. Just as they came out, Zyrow opened the drivers seat door and dragged Chris out, spinning the car out of control and leaving Chris trailing along the back of the motorcycle, only holding on by Zyrow's hand. Commander Lewis had been very specific when he said he wanted the subjects alive, not dead.

Marcus jumped over into the drivers seat, but with his lack of driving ability he struggled and the car crashed into a wall. Marcus and Nighty got out of the car, their faces bloodied and still in shock from the crash. The pursuers seemed to have disappeared, but that was now the least of their troubles. A helicopter flying overhead shot a huge rocket at the department store they had just came through, and another, and another. Eventually, the whole building started to shake and it collapsed, Marcus and Nighty only just running out of the way to avoid being crushed to death. The helicopter continued to fire rockets, but now at the ground near them. People on the street were still just wandering about, seemingly unknowing of this disaster happening before them. Huge chunks of the ground were blown off, before Marcus and Nighty ran into a nearby alleyway. From what Marcus and Nighty could see from the alleyway, another helicopter stopped in the sky a few metres away from the one attacking and blew it straight out of the air.

More helicopters started to fly in, and the streets were now lined with batallions of troops and tanks fighting something out of Marcus and Nighty's sight. The sun had started to set and a dark red shade cast over the street. Suddenly, Marcus passed out.

At the Nightscream Headquarters in London, Commander LickThePaint and his men walked through the door. They hadn't got what they had set out for, but at least it was something. Gambit walked in, dragging Chris on the floor behind him. Felicia was sitting at the reception desk.

'We didn't get the kid, fifi, but we got his buddy. It's the best we could do.' said LTP.
'Very well,' fifi said. 'Orders are you take him down to see Pain in the torture chambers.'
The commander went straight on and through a door at the far end of the lobby, followed by the three soldiers. Fifi turned around as Chris was being dragged down the stairs into the darkness.
'Poor kid,' she muttered to herself. 'Poor kid.'
