who's good at math?

ok well here's a problem:

clock looses 4 minutes every day. how many seconds does the clock lose in 1 minute

I know how to solve it, or what to do rather, but i can't get the final answer.
I know you gotta figure out how many minutes there are in a day, which is 1440, and then somehow figure out how many seconds each minute looses when that 1440 looses 4 minutes.

I haven't done stuff like this in a long time, but the way I did it...

1440(seconds in a day)/240(seconds in four minutes) 60(seconds in a minute)/x(seconds lost during a minute)
Multiply 240 x 60, then divide by 1440 to get x.

Someone should verify it...I'm half asleep.

Edit: Reverse Verification...
10(Seconds Lost) x 24(Hours in a day) = 240
240 / 60(Minutes in an hour) = 4

Nah Narutokun, it's an actual question

The clock is 4 minutes slow, so every 24 hours it gets 4 more minutes behind (AKA loses 4 minutes), you just gotta find out how much is lost in 1 minute

If it loses 4 minutes in 24 hours, then you just convert the minutes into seconds: 4 minutes x 60 = 240
So it loses 240 seconds in 24 hours, time to figure out how much it loses in just 1 hour: 240 / 24 = 10
Now it loses 10 seconds in 1 hour, but now you have to go further to find out how much is lost in 1/60 of that hour, or 1 minute: 10 / 60 = 1/6, or .1666 repeated

Ahriman's method is just changing the order of things, but he messed the math up
There are 86400 seconds in a day, not 1440
You do his method with the correct numbers, you still get 1/6 of a second

yea polar is correct, but i did it slightly differently

it loses 4mins every 1day.

you need to convert these times into seconds.

4 minutes in seconds is 4 x 60 = 240
1 day in seconds is 60 x 60 x 24 = 86400
(this is because you have 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, and 24 hours in a day)

so we get this:

it loses 240 seconds every 86400 seconds

so we need to find out how many seconds it loses in 1 minute (60 seconds)

to do that you need to find out how much to divide 86400 to make it equal 60.

to find that you, divide is by 60.

86400/60 = 1440

so to find out how many seconds it loses every minute, you have to divide both numbers by 1440, which leaves you with this:

it loses .01666 recurring every 60 seconds (every minute)

just trying to explain that as clearly as possible, polar got it right before i even looked at this thread and his method is slightly quicker, i just thought i would write it out in clear steps.

That is what I got when I did it at first, but I was just guessing when I did that. When I did the math, I got 10. I just forgot the last step, basically.

If your ability to type meets your math skills, then that's about where you are. It's not fifth grade mathematics; that's for sure. It's basic algebra; in a lot of places, that's ninth grade material. You could have just as easily said that it was easy.

well the actual math involved like multiplying and stuff is pretty basic math. just the problem itself isn't.

I guess word problems can screw with you.

its not algebra either, look at what gummy did, 0 variables.

just conversion of units i believe.
