[PS-Help] Alternate key not working anymore

As a beginner of Photoshop I learned that alt is your alternate key when using a tool. I learned that when you use magnetic lasso, and come to a border, you should press alt and then gain normal lasso tool so you can draw outside of the picture... But when I press alt with my magnetic lasso now I don't gain the normal lasso anymore! I gain the magnetic lasso with "o" in the left-bottom corner of the magnetic icon.

So What to do? What makes this a reset? What is my problem? Solutions? How to fix it?
