From my website experience, I learned a few things:
1) Make domain name simple... people keep typiing in chasmonline.com AND THATS NOT MY SITE! I actually talked to that guy and he says its a company he is parking the domain for.
2) If you make a site, dont make a site that is too similar to others... you wonder why youtube and myspace are popular? You couldnt find them anywhere else at the time they were made.
3) Dont ask members to sign up if they wont post, its pointless and you have to do member purges, half inactive members on a board is bad
4) Have something unique to bring to the table! Most sites that dont have something unique fail, look at gaiaonline.com... they are the biggest forum in the world and its because they have a unique dynamic avatar system.
5) Hiring a lot of admins and mods to start with helps out because thoes are the ones that usually post a lot.
6) Add fun things to do while they browse the site like music or videos and stuff.
7) Dont pay too much for the site... I have payed probably more than ramarcus has paid for this site (Unless he purchased vbulletin full). I poured over 300 dollars into my site and it was a failure because I did not do enough for it.

PSLOVER wont accept anymore sig tutorials, sorry and good-tutorials wont accept anything really because guildinn submitted most of the useful tutorials and so he wont really accept anything new unless it is a new style.
9) Dont over-email your members, it annoys them, I learned this
10) Always work hard... if that site doesnt work, change the theme of it to something else... popular sites are those that offer something people want. I am changing my site to a piracy site for television episodes like muffindomain.com.
Hope that helps

Ramarcus probably will give you more tips if you poke him enough.
