There were 3 stones - 1 for each lord. In one of the cinematics you can see Mephisto's and Diablo's stone crushed at Hell Forge. The 3rd one - Baal's was destroyed after the events of Lord of Destruction (most likely anyways). Still, with Diablo's stone definitely destroyed - I can't see how he will return. The only thing I can think of is that the world stone's destrucion will somehow allow them to return.
